Chilean Oscar-Winning Director Sebastián Lelio Dies at 52
Sebastián Lelio, the acclaimed Chilean film director and Oscar winner for "A Fantastic Woman," has died at the age of 52. His partner, actress Amalia Kassai, confirmed that he was found dead at his home in Las Condes, a district of Santiago, citing health reasons as the cause of death.
Sebastián Lelio, the Chilean filmmaker who made history as the first director from his country to win an Academy Award, has died at the age of 52. His partner, German-Chilean actress Amalia Kassai, announced that he was found dead at his home in Las Condes, a district of Santiago de Chile, attributing the death to health reasons.
The news triggered widespread mourning across the international film industry and within Chile. Culture Minister Francisco Undurraga praised Lelio’s contributions, stating that his work had elevated South American cinema to global prominence. The Chilean actors’ union, Chile Actores, described his passing as a significant loss for the nation’s cultural landscape.
Lelio achieved international recognition with "A Fantastic Woman" ("Una mujer fantástica"), a film exploring the life of a transgender woman following her partner’s sudden death. The movie won the 2018 Oscar for Best International Feature Film, marking the first and only time this award has gone to a Chilean production. It also received the Silver Bear for Best Screenplay at the Berlin International Film Festival in 2017.
Prior to his major success, Lelio spent several years in Berlin as a guest of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) in 2012. During this period, he edited his film "Gloria," which premiered at the Berlinale the following year. The film, starring Paulina García, won three awards, including the Silver Bear for Best Actress.
Lelio remained in Berlin for several years, establishing a South American restaurant named "Gloria" in the Kreuzberg district. He later told the Deutsche Presse-Agentur that the concept for "A Fantastic Woman" originated in Berlin and that the city had deeply influenced his work, describing the time there as a life milestone.
Born in 1974 in Mendoza, Argentina, Lelio spent his childhood in Viña del Mar, Chile. He studied film at the University of Chile in Santiago before making his feature debut with "La sagrada familia" in 2005. After directing a Hollywood remake of "Gloria" starring Julianne Moore, he returned to themes rooted in his heritage with "A Fantastic Woman," sparking global debates on identity and loss.
His death marks the end of a career that significantly shaped Latin American cinema.
