Paris Soir - British Doctor Evacuated to London Isolation Unit After Ebola Contracted in Congo

A British doctor who contracted Ebola while working in the Democratic Republic of the Congo has been flown to London and admitted to a specialist isolation unit at the Royal Free Hospital. The Department of Health and Social Care confirmed that the medical professional is receiving care at the facility, which houses one of the United Kingdom’s highest-security infectious disease units.

The patient was evacuated on a dedicated medical flight organized by the British and Congolese governments in coordination with international health partners. Health officials have moved quickly to reassure the public that the risk of transmission remains low. Dr Renu Bindra, deputy director of the All Hazards Public Health Response team at the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), stated that both the UKHSA and the National Health Service maintain well-established and robust infection prevention and control protocols designed to limit the risk of onward transmission.

"The risk to the wider public remains low," Dr Bindra said, emphasizing the agency's confidence in current containment measures. The UKHSA has reiterated that the overall threat level for the UK population has not increased due to this single case.

The doctor is believed to have been working to tackle an ongoing Ebola outbreak in the DRC, a crisis that figures published on the UN website indicate has resulted in more than 5,100 deaths. The virus carries a high fatality rate, with previous outbreaks resulting in death in between 25% and 90% of those infected. Symptoms typically appear between two to 21 days after contact with an orthoebolavirus, beginning with fever, aches, pains, and fatigue before potentially worsening to include diarrhea, vomiting, and unexplained bleeding.

Prior to this case, there have been only four confirmed instances of the virus in the UK. One occurred in 1976 following a laboratory needle incident, while three others involved healthcare workers responding to an outbreak in West Africa between 2014 and 2015.

The Royal Free Hospital operates a high-level isolation unit staffed by a dedicated team of doctors, nurses, and laboratory personnel. The facility has previously treated adult patients suffering from Lassa fever, Ebola, and Crimean Congo haemorrhagic fever. Entry to the unit is strictly limited and features a specialist tent with controlled ventilation that allows care to be delivered by NHS staff. All air leaving the unit is thoroughly filtered to ensure there is no risk to anyone inside or outside the hospital.

Professor Emma Thomson, director of the MRC-University of Glasgow Centre for Virus Research, noted that the UK is extremely well prepared to care for patients with Ebola. She highlighted that while the Bundibugyo virus, which causes the current outbreak in the DRC, can cause severe disease and is highly infectious through direct contact with infected bodily fluids, the Royal Free possesses state-of-the-art isolation facilities and highly experienced clinical teams.

"Strict protocols are in place to protect healthcare workers and prevent onward transmission," Professor Thomson said. "The risk to the wider UK public is extremely low."

Dr Damien Tully, an infectious disease expert from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, described the infection of a British healthcare worker as deeply concerning but not entirely unexpected. He noted that healthcare workers are on the front line of these outbreaks, often treating severely ill patients under extremely challenging conditions. Even with rigorous protective measures, accidental exposures can occur.

"This case is a stark reminder of the risks faced by those responding to the outbreak of Ebola disease caused by Bundibugyo virus in the DRC," Dr Tully said. However, he clarified that this does not suggest the virus has become more transmissible or that the threat to the UK has increased.

Unlike respiratory viruses such as Covid-19 and influenza, which can spread through the air, Ebola is transmitted primarily through direct contact with infected bodily fluids. People are not generally infectious until they develop symptoms. Dr Tully explained that identifying and isolating cases, together with appropriate infection prevention measures, can be highly effective in preventing onward transmission.

"For the UK public, the risk from this planned medical evacuation is extremely low," he added.
